What is the Day of the Dead?

The Day of the Dead ( in Spanish, also known as "Da de Muertos") is celebrated from October 31 through November 2, 2023. The Mexican holiday known as Day of the Dead is observed all over Mexico and other cultures.

Family and friend gatherings are the main focus of the holiday to pray for and remember deceased loved ones.  Mexico, where it is a national holiday and all banks are closed, celebrates it in particular.

The event is held on November 1 and 2 in honor of All Saints' Day and All Soul's Day, two Catholic holidays. Building private altars in remembrance of the deceased using marigolds and sugar skulls, as well as visiting graves with these as gifts, are two traditions associated with the holiday.

Additionally, they leave behind the deceased's belongings. Researchers believe that indigenous traditions that date back hundreds of years and an Aztec festival honoring the goddess Mictecacihuatl are the sources of this modern Mexican holiday.
